Is a checkup in Colombia safe? Here's how to verify it yourself

Don't take our word for anything — that's the entire point of this article. Colombia's quality case rests on three independently checkable pillars. Here's how to check each one.

Every medical tourism site says its destination is safe and world-class. So skip the adjectives; here is Colombia's evidence, with instructions for verifying each piece yourself in under twenty minutes.

Pillar 1: the WHO ranking — with its context

The World Health Organization's 2000 World Health Report ranked Colombia's health system #22 globally and #1 in the Western Hemisphere — ahead of the United States (#37) and Canada (#30) in that assessment. We cite it precisely because it's the only comprehensive global systems ranking the WHO ever produced — and honestly: it's from 2000. It measured structural qualities (universal coverage design, fairness, responsiveness) that persist, but it is not a 2026 report card. That's why it's pillar one of three, never the whole argument.

Pillar 2: hospital-level JCI accreditation — the current credential

Joint Commission International accreditation is the standard elite hospitals worldwide pursue — the same credential behind Bangkok's famous names. In Colombia it's held at the hospital level by institutions including Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá and Fundación Valle del Lili (Cali). Verify it: JCI publishes a searchable directory of accredited organizations on its website — type the hospital's name, see its current status. Two honest cautions: accreditation applies to the hospital, so be wary of any standalone clinic borrowing the glow of an institution it isn't part of; and a great checkup can absolutely happen at strong non-JCI hospitals — JCI is a high bar, not the only bar.

Pillar 3: ReTHUS — the public physician registry

Colombia maintains a public government registry of every licensed health professional: ReTHUS (Registro Único Nacional del Talento Humano en Salud). Verify it: at rethus.gov.co, search the physician's name or ID and confirm their license and registered specialty. Five minutes, no Spanish beyond the search box required — and any provider who bristles at credential questions has answered a different, more important question.

The pre-booking checklist

• Hospital named explicitly? (A package that won't name its hospital isn't a package — it's a broker.)
• Hospital checked in JCI's directory, or otherwise established as a major institution?
• Reviewing physician verified in ReTHUS?
• Itemized package contents in writing, priced in advance? (Ranges on sites like ours are typical 2026 figures, never quotes.)
• English written report confirmed for the trip home?

And ordinary travel safety?
