The checklist
The over-50 checkup checklist: everything that's actually due
Your fifties are when screening guidelines stop being suggestions and start being a list. Here's the list — complete, sex-specific, and honest about what's optional.
Somewhere around 50, preventive medicine changes tone. The guideline bodies that shrugged at your thirties now have opinions about your colon, your heart, your bones, and your skin — on schedules. Kept up with individually at US cash rates, the list is expensive enough that many people quietly don't. Consolidated into one comprehensive package, it's a long weekend. Here's the complete list to check any package against.
Everyone, 50+
- Blood pressure — annually at minimum.
- Lipid panel + fasting glucose/HbA1c — every 1–2 years (diabetes screening is standard from 35 in current guidance).
- Colonoscopy — the big one; average-risk screening runs 45–75, typically every 10 years when clean. Costs and trip logistics.
- Full-skin dermatologic exam — especially with sun history or fair skin.
- Vision and hearing screening — both decline quietly; both screen cheaply.
- Vaccination review — shingles and pneumococcal conversations start this decade.
- Cardiac risk assessment — stress testing, echocardiogram, or calcium scoring as your physician indicates; the cardiac toolkit, priced.
Women, 50+
- Mammography — every 1–2 years per major guidelines.
- Cervical screening — Pap/HPV on schedule until guidelines release you (typically 65 with adequate prior screening).
- Bone densitometry (DEXA) — at 65, or post-menopause with risk factors; cheap to add abroad.
Men, 50+
- PSA discussion and testing — guidelines frame 55–69 as the shared-decision window; the operative word is discussion, which is what the package's physician consult is for.
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound — once, ages 65–75, for men who've ever smoked.
Situational additions
- Low-dose chest CT — annually for the guideline-qualifying smoking history (50–80, 20+ pack-years, current or quit within 15).
- Hepatitis C — once for all adults if never tested.
Using the list
Print it, mark what you've had in the last two years, and what remains is your trip's shopping list — a Colombian comprehensive package ($1,200–$2,800, typical 2026 ranges, not quotes) covers most of it in one building with results reviewed before you fly home. And the standing caveat, always: this checklist is for the symptom-free; new symptoms skip the queue and see a doctor now.

How much does the full over-50 panel cost abroad?

When can I stop certain screenings?
Guidelines wind down colonoscopy around 75, cervical screening around 65 with adequate history, and adjust others by health status — decade-by-decade timing is covered in our checkup frequency guide, and specifics belong with your physician.
